Mirafi 140NC Case Study

THE SCENARIO

Highway 407ETR is a privately owned and operated electronic toll highway that runs 67 miles (108km) east and west just north of Toronto, Canada’s largest city. Highway 407ETR was the first all-electronic, open-access toll highway worldwide. The highway first opened in 1997 and at the time, the largest construction project in the history of Canada. To date, more than 300,000 vehicles use the highway every day.

In 2004, the highway offered a $30 million dollar contract to add 22 lane kilometers (13.5 miles).  The contract included widening the existing 4 lane highway to 6 lanes. A portion of the work consisted of the installation of a geotextile-wrapped pavement edge drain running along the entire length of the new pavement system.  During the first phase, they used over  60km (37mi) of a related edge drain technique.

DESIGN

The highway widening project included digging up the soil next to the highway, the placement of a 900mm (35-inch) crushed aggregate base, and doweling of the existing concrete pavement to allow for the new 300mm-thick poured concrete road surface.  The pavement edge trench drain 400mm x 600mm x 400mm (16in x 24in x 16in) was necessary in the design. A Class 1 MTO nonwoven geotextile was required for the trench wrap.  The pavement edge drain included a 100mm (4in) HDPE BIG “O” drainage pipe and 10mm (3/8in) drain rock, all covered in TenCate Mirafi® 140NC geotextile which met the minimum specified values.

CONSTRUCTION

Mirafi® 140NC was sent to the site and the factory cut to 2.5m (7.5 ft) widths to reduce waste.  The width allowed for a minimum overlap of 400mm (16 inches). A wheeled trenching machine unearthed the trench to the needed depth.  The tractor-drawn hopper placed the Mirafi® 140NC, inserted the 100mm (4 inches) perforated HDPE drain pipe, and dumped the drain rock all in one continuous operation.  During specific intervals, a T-connector was inserted and the pipe vented to the highway median. Note, no compaction was needed for the drainage rock.

PERFORMANCE

The performance of the drainage system including the Mirafi® 140NC geotextile has proven to be excellent. The geotextile will prevent elements from entering the drainage system which could plug or reduce the drainage ability. This well-functioning drainage system will ensure the long-lasting performance of this unique highway.
